Liv Sin's highly anticipated third studio album, "KaliYuga", released this last Friday (27), marking the debut of Liv Sin's new lineup consisting of guitarists Jay Matharu and Patrick Ankermark, bassist Daniel Skoglund, and drummer Per Bjevoluk. The album was produced by Simon Johansson, guitarist for Wolf and Memory Garden, alongside Mike Wead, guitarist for Mercyful Fate and King Diamond. The mixing was handled by Tue Madsen (Witchery, The Haunted, At the Gates).
Prior to the release of the first singles, Liv hinted that "KaliYuga" would showcase influences beyond their previous works, with mentions of bands like Architects and Parkway Drive. The album displays a heavier approach at times, while retaining the quintet's signature sound.
The opening track, "The Process", delivers a balance between melody and aggression with modern production, followed by "Antihero" and "King of Fools" which evoke greater eighties references. "Karma" stands out as the album's pinnacle moment.
"I Am the Storm" and "Virus" showcase excellent tempo changes, creating two of the greatest moments of the entire tracklist. Additionally, "D.E.R." features guest appearances by vocalists Zak Tell (ex-Clawfinger), Wenderson D’Paula (Army of Souls), and Madeleine Liljestam (Eleine).
The duo of guitarists offers cohesion in timbres and skillfully crafted riffs throughout the album. "KaliYuga" secures Liv Jagrell's position as a prominent figure in the European metal underground, a position she has been fighting for since her former band.
